One of the main disadvantages of social media involves children and teenagers. In an academic journal, Doug Fodeman stated, “For students who use Facebook, there is a false sense of privacy.” Since social media users do not interact face to face, they feel anonymous, thus causing a lack of social responsibility in their minds. This can lead to some very negative repercussions, such as theft of bank accounts. Many children do not fully understand that almost everything posted on the Internet can be found in some way, causing safety risks. The security risk begins when a user adds a hacker as a friend. Informal studies show that teens accept 44% to 87% of friend requests from strangers. If a hacker becomes friends with someone on social media, they can see almost everything the victim has posted, unless they are manually set to not show certain information. If the user is not careful about the information they share online, hackers can gather enough information over time to guess account passwords and do all kinds of damage such as stealing bank accounts, installing viruses, or even stealing of identity (Fodeman). This major disadvantage of social media is compounded by people not knowing what type of information is safe to share on the Internet. Not only is there a security risk, but social media can be harmful to people's social lives
