William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies describes the story of a group of boys stranded on an island after a plane crash. While it is unclear, it can be inferred that the time frame is either during the time of World War II or set in the future with a war that Golding believes is coming. It might be difficult to wrap up both time periods, as the mentioned battles are missing, as well as no technology to signify the difference between the eras, but the only thing the kids have on this island, are their minds. With every decision made, whether good or bad, there are three parts of the mind that interfere or adapt to the creation of that decision. These three sectors are the id, the ego and the superego. Every character in Lord of the Flies uses all three to decide on an action and carry it out. At the beginning of the story, Ralph demonstrates all three with the use of the seashell found on the beach.
