LiteratureDiscrimination and oppression throughout history- Reasons and reasonsDiscrimination and prejudice have accompanied human civilizations since the beginning. Its accompaniment has generated unethical and morally wrong ideologies, some of which have been put into practice. It is easy to define discrimination as a natural interaction between a superior and inferior force, especially when the superior force is imperialistic. Major discriminations throughout history share similar factors but also show distinct motives and reasons for such oppressive and discriminatory actions. This is evident in the books “The Bronze Bow” and “Year of Impossible Good Byes” (YIG) “The Bronze Bow” is set in the flourishing times of the vast Roman Empire. It was a time when the Romans undoubtedly dominated the whole of Europe. However, their supremacy was based on violence and cruelty against those they conquered. Daniel, the protagonist, lives with the desire to avenge his father who was crucified before his eyes by the Romans. Daniel later becomes involved in resistance movements against the legionnaire, driven by hatred and horror. «After my father's death I made a vow. Maybe they would have said that an eight-year-old couldn't make a vow, an actual ticket that was binding. But I did it. I swore I would repay them with my whole life. That I would hate them, fight them and kill them. This is all I live for.'(The Bronze Bow, p. 82-83). This is a statement made by Daniel after telling Joel and Malthace how his father was crucified and clearly indicates his vexation. Daniel's contempt for the Romans and his rebellious military actions could have been prevented if the Romans had not resisted......middle of paper...Korean resistance consists of strengthening the amount of force exerted upon They. However, a connection can be seen between the two. Both ruling parties have shown no effort to pacify the vanquished. Both did not realize that even if the "force", whatever form is used, is significantly effective for the first few times, it gradually loses considerable productivity. (Unless the amount of effort becomes consistently stronger than the previous one, which of course has its limits.) Their oppressive and discriminatory behavior ultimately led to their downfall and a lesson was learned from it. True victory and triumph are achieved only when the superior force earns respect and admiration from the vanquished. But we also realize that this also applies to social relationships. And the time has come for people and nations to “truly” conquer what needs to be conquered.
