They do this through media such as our families, the media and society. Our families can embrace gender roles or be completely against them. The media feeds us what is acceptable for men and women to do, a man can post a photo showing off his body and people will hug him, but if a woman does exactly the same thing people shame her by calling her offensive names. Society as a whole defines a pre-established gender role and enforces it depending on your position. We are born with one sex, but we are given the choice of gender and how we choose to express ourselves. Gender roles teach us what appropriate behavior is for men and women. External forces such as family, the media, and society itself try to make us conform to established gender roles. We live in a world where it is becoming more and more acceptable to be who you really are and break the mold you were given at birth.
