Provided the opportunity to look back at the initial thoughts presented and compare them with the new ideas generated. In particular, there was judgment on parents for not schooling their children and on Bluebell for her behavior during the session. Being able to reflect on these thoughts through the use of a reflective journal was invaluable, as it highlighted gaps in professional knowledge, particularly a lack of awareness regarding the backgrounds of the children who attended the sessions. In practice this lack of knowledge has led to some incorrect assumptions being made about Bluebell, regarding his behavior as destructive. With the additional knowledge gathered a change in attitude occurred and a change in practice was considered. The critical incident not only challenged the perception of children and their behavior, but also placed them in context. It considered the nature of the school environment and how it works to include, or in this case exclude, some children and ethnic minorities. For educators this exclusion has clear effects on their practices, firstly there is a clear need to differentiate behavior management strategies, and secondly it challenges the perceptions of individual children and serves as a reminder that sometimes situations, people and actions are not quite what they think. seem; a reminder to question the validity of opinions, beliefs and values
