Sicko, a film by Michael Moore was released in 2007. The film investigates the health care system in the United States. We would definitely be amazed by the facts and figures explained in this documentary. The film explains the failure of the healthcare system in the United States. America has advanced medical technology, large hospitals, and educated healthcare professionals, but these facilities are not universal. The film begins by talking about true American stories; what some people have experienced from the current healthcare system, those who did and did not have health insurance. The story begins with Adam, one of the 50 million people in America who don't have health insurance. Due to an accident Adam needed medical treatment, but since he has no insurance he stitches his leg himself. The second story involved Rick, who accidentally cut off the tops of two fingers, his middle and ring fingers while working on the table saw. Because he didn't have health insurance, Rick couldn't replace the top of his middle finger because it cost $60,000 and he didn't have the money. So he decided to put his ring finger back because it was $12,000 that he could afford. The film doesn't go into detail about the 50 million people who don't have health insurance, but it does talk about the approximately 250 million Americans who do have health insurance. Larry and Dana Smith, a couple who had insurance, but due to hospital deductibles and co-pays they had to sell their house and move into their daughter's home. Frank at the age of 79 worked in a supermarket because his insurance did not pay for all the medicines he needed. There was another lady who had health insurance, but it was canceled after she was diagnosed with...half of the document...rance. In America the cost of healthcare per person is $7,000; while in Cuba it was 251 dollars. Additionally, Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than the United States because it has access to universal healthcare. Sicko provides a good understanding of the healthcare system in the United States. In my opinion, Michael Moore did a great job getting his message across. However, some issues were not addressed in the film, such as the amount of taxes people pay in these countries and the waiting lists for certain medical treatments such as cancer or heart transplant. It is also true that people from many other countries come to America for medical care, and that is because they do not receive adequate health care in their home country. However, the film provides a good understanding of the concept of healthcare and concerns me because I don't have any health insurance.
