Topic > My attitude towards the "Greening Greater Toronto" initiative

The civic issue I have chosen to focus this project on is climate change; to be more specific, the “Greening Greater Toronto” initiative. Climate change is an ongoing problem affecting the entire world and if we continue on the path we are on, our days here on Earth will be numbered. But the Greening Greater Toronto initiative is trying to create more environmentally safe options that will help improve the situation. Some of these options include: making transportation options more sustainable (public transit, bicycling/more bike lanes, carpooling, etc.) and using more reusable products, just to name a few. One of these initiatives is the “Race to Reduce” initiative; This project challenges building owners and their tenants to reduce energy consumption by 10% over a four-year period. Leslie Domenico says that if the “Race to Reduce” goal is reached it will have the same effect as removing 27,000 cars from the road. Another initiative that has been implemented is the “Greening the Goods” initiative; this project brings low-carbon options to the “cargo handling” industry in Toronto. These options of new policies and ideas have been presented to the government together with businesses. If the “Greening the Goods” initiative were to be implemented, costs and emissions released would be reduced: saving time, money and protecting the environment. One of the funds that has been established is the self-proclaimed “first voluntary carbon reduction fund”; Td Bank Financial Group and The Bank of Montreal have committed a $13 million investment so far, bringing them closer to becoming the first major zero-carbon company in all of Canada. This fund will go towards environmental awareness, along with many other things. Some proposed solutions to this problem are, creating more energy efficient or sustainable transportation, this will improve air quality by releasing less CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. One solution that will come from the “Race to Reduction” initiative is that by asking companies to reduce their energy transitions by 10%, this would also equate to 27,000 cars being taken off the roads; therefore this will also improve the air quality. Another solution is to reduce the number of trees cut down; as trees help turn CO2 into oxygen. All of these solutions mentioned above will help improve climate change in general, but especially in Toronto (also known as the Greening Greater Toronto initiative). If we continue down the path we are headed, we will continue to shorten our days here on Earth. I believe that with initiatives like “Greening Greater Toronto” and “Race to Reduce” we can reduce our carbon footprint. As well as improving air quality, pollution levels and many other positive outcomes.
