Scabies is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei (also called human itch mite), a parasite (an organism that lives in or on another organism). The mite is a small eight-legged insect that burrows into the skin to feed, live and lay eggs. Scabies can be transmitted by physical contact: between people through skin-to-skin contact or through fomites (objects that can carry an infection). For example, sharing clothes or bedding with an infected person can lead to the transmission of scabies. The mites burrow and lay eggs under the top layer of skin, causing intense itching. Scabies is widespread throughout the world and can affect people of all ages, races and income levels, so anyone can get scabies. It is common in children and crowded populations, such as prisons and nursing homes. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Crusted scabies may be found in older adults, immunocompromised people (weak immune systems), or people who are unable to itch or scratch (e.g., paralysis). These people may not have the usual itchy rash. Instead, they have thick crusts and vesicles (fluid-filled pockets) on their skin that contain many mites, making them very contagious. However, both forms of scabies can be treated with medications. The drug takes time to work and must kill both the mites and the eggs to completely eliminate the infection. Signs and Symptoms The most common symptom of scabies is an intense itchy rash that usually gets worse at night. People may lose sleep due to itching. The most common locations are between the fingers, wrist, elbow, armpits and waist, but they can be found almost anywhere on the body. The rash appears small, raised, grayish. white or skin-colored “bumps” in line; these are the sites where mites burrow under the skin. They are commonly found between the fingers, in skin folds, and on the genitals or breasts. The rash can also appear as pimples, eczema, or insect bites. Scratching the rash can cause sores on the skin. These wounds can become infected with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. After becoming infected, it may take 2-6 weeks for symptoms to appear. They are still contagious even when symptoms are not present. Scabies in infants and children can be found all over the body, including the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It can be very uncomfortable and they may not want to eat or sleep.
