Topic > Understanding diversity leads to equality

Diversity means to me that people of unique cultures, religions and races are brought together and treated equally. Diversity is extremely important because if everyone was the same life would be very boring. In Catholic social teachings we are taught to give dignity to human beings, therefore also to different human beings, because we are all equal. Furthermore, these teachings say that we should love and respect others, but if we have prejudices and other negative feelings towards others we cannot fully live according to these teachings. Diversity can sometimes be difficult; however, it is extremely necessary in everything we do. This is especially true in America because it is a mixed bag. Say no to plagiarism. Here in America I've heard a lot about white privilege and how they get jobs easier and overall have a much better chance of succeeding. I feel that some people are privileged more than others, for example rich people have more privileges than poor people. In my opinion this is not fair because everyone should be guaranteed equal opportunities. I've learned a lot about biases and implicit biases, and I know they're wrong. They often encourage scapegoating and I have personally suffered such cases in my life. Being an international student and all, when I came to America, I thought I would experience a certain degree of negativity from others. However, it is much more than I had previously imagined. It's not so much verbal as it is non-verbal. There are, however, many times when I get unpleasant looks from people when I'm in public. Many people think that all Muslims are terrorists and that they all have the same title. Also because I go to the airport I am 70% more likely to be stopped and questioned than other individuals. I feel extremely embarrassed when someone judges me before getting to know me, because if they took the opportunity to get to know me they would see that I am very kind. I learned a lot about being an ally. Now I can be an ally by joining other individuals like me. I think a group of international students united together could be a very beneficial group. We could all meet together and discuss the different experiences we have had and also promote diversity and education to other American students. I think this idea would definitely be successful and help many students who have suffered stereotypes like me. I learned a lot about diversity through this course. One example that made me think differently about diversity was this course. Before I didn't think that such different people could meet and get along so well. However, there were many people who spoke to me personally and made me feel much better. Through this course I learned that even though we may have different colors, cultures or religions, we are all very similar and have the same goals in life. Please note: this is just an example. I think it's very important that we all treat each other equally. We are all created equally and we all deserve a fair chance in life. We do not have the opportunity to choose our race, culture and sometimes even religion, so when someone judges us on these things it is irrational..
