James Watt was born on 17 January 1736 in Greenock, Scotland. In his early childhood he loved studying mathematics in high school. When Watt returned to Glasgow, he set up shop at the university in 1757 and made mathematical instruments. Seven years later, Watt married her and she had six of his children before dying 9 years later. Watts became intrigued by the amount of steam wasted while repairing a Newcomen model steam engine in 1764. After a full year of troubleshooting problems and complications, in May 1765 Watts found the solution and his greatest invention: the condenser separate. He realized that latent heat loss was the Newcomen engine's most horrific flaw and that therefore condensation must occur in a chamber distinct from the cylinder but not connected to it. Shortly after this discovery he met John Roebuck who soon became his partner. They entered into a partnership in 1768 after Watt had a little help from loans from Joseph Black. The following year Watt was awarded the famous patent for "A New Method Invented for Reducing the Consumption of Steam and Fuel in Fire Engines." Subsequently, Watt became a surveyor in 1766. For the next 8 years he was continually busy laying out canal routes in Scotland. This work prevented him from making progress on the steam engine. After Roebuck went bankrupt in 1772 Watts got tired of surveying and Scotland so he emigrated to Birmingham where he began a friendly interest with Matthew Boulton who was an English manufacturer and engineer in 1774.
