The Callous Nature of Government The establishment of elite power in a society produces feelings of desperation and fear. George Orwell, a world-famous author, is known for his politically influenced works regarding socialism. In Animal Farm, Orwell creates a satire based on the Russian communist regime from 1917 to 1943. Animals seeking freedom under the leadership of their liberators, the pigs, rebel against their oppressive owner, Farmer Jones. Ironically, after the revolution, the Pigs, led by Napoleon, become the oppressors. Orwell's most influential novel Nineteen Eighty-Four describes a society under totalitarian control. The Big Brother dictatorship in Oceania governs the population with strict laws and a distinct hierarchy. Winston Smith, a worker and member of the Outer Party, is secretly unhappy with his life. When he begins to rebel against the Party, he is discovered, brutally forced into rehabilitation and forced to conform to their ideals. In both novels, authorities use their power to gain superior status at the expense of others, government control over the population, poor treatment of the working class, and failure to meet basic needs illustrate the destructive nature of the antagonists. the population control in both works is manipulative and brutal. The pigs on Animal Farm use songs to control the thoughts of other animals. The pigs teach: "all the humblest animals... the maxim FOUR GOOD LEGS, TWO BAD LEGS... the sheep developed a great liking for the maxim and began to bleat... for hours and hours" (The Farm of the animals 22). Initially, the pigs trick all animals into believing that anything on four legs is a friend and anything on two, i.e. humans, is the enemy. However, later, when the pigs ga... middle of paper... Eighty-four, Orwell describes a society in which the basic rights of human beings are denied by the government. Both treat their citizens so cruelly and unfairly because that is their nature. If anything reflects this kind of ambition in the government system, society should take a stand. Because no government has the right to impose its will on its citizens. It is a human right to be able to think, dress and feed ourselves without any assistance. The government should never be able to control and manipulate citizens into submission, use intimidation tactics to get what it wants, or any other unjust means of belief. The sole purpose of government should be to maintain the standard of living and protect the interests of society. It is up to society to take a stand and declare its needs, because if they don't decide, the government will do it for them.
