The North and the South in the years from 1800 to 1860 were divided into two different territories that showed their different morals and lifestyle. Both factions have conflicting ideas about issues affecting the nation. Compromise was made impossible in the 1860s because of disagreement over states' rights, intense growth in sectionalism, and dispute over the morality of slavery. During that time, the North underwent major social, industrial, and economic changes known as the antebellum period. The industrial economy took place in the North while the cotton reign took place in the South. Southern states wanted to expand slavery to other countries, while Northern states wanted to limit slavery to the South. In the 1860 election, when Lincoln was elected, he believed slavery was wrong and made efforts to keep the Union together. Attempts such as the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Great Compromise of 1850 were made to bring reconciliation between the North and the South which led to the Tariff/Nullification Dispute.
