My paternal grandfather passed away and both my father and brother are only children. I may be related to my aunt Diana, but through her I am no longer related to my cousins. If my father had a brother, I would be related to his children. Since patrilineal emphasizes father-son relationships, my brother would have the responsibility of carrying on the family line. Depending on the culture, my parents may not even want to keep me as a daughter and arrange a marriage for me as a child. Furthermore, if I had a husband and children of my own, I would no longer be part of my family tree and would become an insignificant part of my husband's kin. Alternatively, I could not join my husband's family and simply be a "parent" to him
