It may be difficult and complicated, however it is still possible. Members always have the right to choose not to participate in any group work. However, social workers must mention what the consequences are of refusing to participate. For example, if a member has been court ordered to attend the AA and their charges are pending completion, refusal to participate may result in a violation. To try to get to the root of resistant behavior, social workers should try to uncover the group member's feelings and thoughts. This could help lead to the appropriate treatment of the group member. Throughout the group work, the social worker should remain patient and show compassion for the group members. Having a sense of humor and knowing that you can't help everyone is key to helping the reluctant and resistant group
