Janelle Mora VierraSociologia 325March 13, 2013 The songs of Blurred Lines are more than just a piece of entertainment. Songs are also used to send messages. Some of these messages are positive, while others can be harmful. Blurred Lines is a song that sends a harmful message about women. It is a song that promotes degradation, oppression, objectification and violence towards women. Oppression is defined as “unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power,” in Merriam Webster's dictionary. You're an animal, darling, it's in your nature. Let me set you free, is a song lyric that sends an oppressive message to women with its reference to women as beings who must be controlled and can only be set free by men. The text is also degrading because it says that women are not human and therefore do not deserve equal treatment. The song also has lyrics that can be seen as promoting violence. I know you want it, is a lyric that is repeated several times throughout the song. This text reinforces the idea that women really want sex when they say they don't. “The song is about a girl who wants to have crazy sex, but doesn't say it. Which creates the problem of men thinking that no actually means yes” (Jones 2013). This sends the dangerous message that rape is okay. Objectification is also present in the song in the form of this lyric, "What they dream about when you got your jeans on, what we need steam for you, the hottest bitch in this place, I feel so lucky." The text here implies that women are sexual objects who exist for the pleasure of men. A song that promotes such misogyny of women has an impact on how women are viewed by other people... middle of paper... it's okay if you come with me[Bridge: Robin Thicke] Shake up the vibe, get down , get up Makes like it hurts, like it hurts What don't you like about work?
