Topic > Integrity in characters from various literary works

IntegrityIntegrity is basing one's actions on a framework of internally consistent principles. This means that those with integrity base their actions on a moral code of honor, character, strength and courage. These principles guide a character's motivations and cause, setting aside public image to lead a life of chivalry and conviction. An example is Willie Bodega from Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quiñonez. Although Willie's means are shady, he is committed to the betterment of Spanish Harlem through the improvement of abandoned and damaged apartments. Then there's John Proctor from Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Proctor refuses to provide a false confession that represents a true religious and personal position. Refusing to give up his personal integrity, Proctor proclaims his belief that such integrity will get him to heaven. Finally there is Holden Caulfield from JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. However, Holden displays the inherent opposite of integrity by embodying a hypocrite. Willie Bodega and John Proctor embody the principles of integrity and let it shine through their actions. However, Holden Caulfield shows his deception and wickedness through his constant dishonesty and hypocrisy. First, there's Willie Bodega, known throughout Spanish Harlem for getting someone that job or putting them in a low-rent apartment. He knows that since he's been successful in the neighborhood he grew up in, he needs to give back. Willie does this by renovating dilapidated apartments into decent homes for good people. Although these renovations are funded by shady drug deals, Willie is truly doing it for the betterment of Spanish Harlem. In this, Willie's integrity really shines through his actions. Another example of this...... middle of the paper...... e. Spencer attempted to discuss the document Holden wrote for him and the causes of Holden's expulsion. However, Holden doesn't respect what Mr. Spencer had to say. In fact he doesn't even listen. Showing such disrespect that you completely ignore those who are truly trying to help you defines Holden as a deceitful hypocrite. Ernesto Quiñonez and Arthur Miller brilliantly create characters who, despite personal imperfections, let their integrity shine through their actions. Willie Bodega and John Proctor embody the principles of integrity and demonstrate them through their actions to improve their communities. However, JD Salinger also meticulously portrays a flawed person who, due to his efforts, slips into mental instability. Holden Caulfield shows his deception and wickedness through his constant dishonesty and hypocrisy.
