As a future teacher of young children, I think one of the most important components of the school curriculum is guidance. I believe a teacher's goal is not just to stop inappropriate behavior, but to help children learn to manage their own behaviors. A central part of early childhood education is the development of social skills. It is important for teachers to know that the strategy used to help children learn to manage their behaviors is a crucial part of their development. I think it's important for teachers to teach what to do rather than simply telling them what not to do. Guidance is a process that is learned over time and the ability to make mistakes and learn from them in a supportive environment is a great opportunity for children to become socially competent. There is only so much teaching a teacher can do before a child learns to resolve a situation on their own. Our job as teachers will be to teach our students about good and evil and hope that they learn to figure it out for themselves in the future. Teachers assist children with their problems in a positive way and teach them appropriate behaviors so that they understand what is acceptable and unacceptable. I believe that guidance is that part of early childhood education that helps a child develop and shape himself as a socially competent child. Guidance Strategies In my classroom I plan to have positive guidance strategies to help children develop self-control, assist them in making good decisions, and encourage them to take responsibility for their actions. One indirect form of guidance that I plan to apply in my classroom is to create a positive classroom environment. A positive classroom environment will provide my students with a newfound paper medium that can handle the stress and difficulties that can come with the job. I've never handled stress very well and the thought of being responsible for it scares me. Another concern of mine concerns relationships with parents and what they want for their children's education. I intend to do my best as a teacher, but I fear that I will not be able to meet the needs of all parents. I have several fears and concerns about how good of a teacher I will be once I actually start. I push most of these fears to the back of my mind and try to focus on all the exciting things teaching can offer. I love that kids look up to me, but I worry that I might screw up somehow and not be a good role model. I will try to be the best role model I can be, but no one is perfect. I'm trying to stay focused on educating children and preparing them for a better future.
