Topic > Career and Career Counseling Course Overview

The Career and Career Counseling Overview course is an introduction to or job description of a career counselor. In this course we have discussed learning styles, carried out listening activities, talked about SOLER, counseling skills and attributes, multiple intelligences, client reluctance, how to carry out surveys, dimensions of employability and conflict management. All these active classroom activities have given me a deep understanding of my skills and the areas I need to improve in to become a career counselor. During the second weeks of the class, Diane discussed the learning styles available to people. The three learning styles are visual, auditory and tactile. Visual style is what people prefer to lean into or remember best when using images, photos, videos, graphs and diagrams. This is the style where people like to see things or remember things with images. There is also the visual reading style where people learn best when they read and write about it. The auditory style is one in which people like to learn or remember better when they hear or talk about it. People of this style learn best by listening to conversations and class discussions. Tactile style is also known as kinesthetic style, this is the style in which people learn best when they practice with their hands or by doing things they have learned. Kinesthetic learners enjoy doing hands-on activities, such as building things and having fun creating them. From week three to week six we discussed listening skills which is the SOLER, counseling skills and attributes. According to Diane's overview, the Week 3 objectives for today's lesson, the "S" PowerPoint slides are f... middle of the paper... information on where to get help for financial problems, child care, housing, etc. In weeks 10 and 11 we looked at conflict management. Each person has their own style of resolving conflicts, and each conflict management style has its advantages and disadvantages. The 5 conflict management styles are retreat, fighter, compromise, peacemaker and diplomat. During this week we had an active course where I discovered that I am a diplomat when it comes to resolving conflicts. Diplomats like to work and find the solution together, asking everyone for options and finding common ground that everyone agrees on. The downside is that it takes a long time. The career counselor can use this activity to help their clients discover the way they use to resolve conflicts and where they need improvements because this will help them in their future work conflicts.
