Everyone has a tendency to think or act immaturely when something doesn't happen the way they wanted. The way people behave and develop in such situations can reveal the hidden sides and true inner self of their character. The changes that occur through conflict can represent how mature they truly are. Nazneen Sadiq's story “Shonar Arches” shows the impact on a character's maturity as a result of the main conflict. The happy resolution of Amit's conflict shows how, over time, even a rude boy can mature into a gentleman. In the story, the way the conflict grew and resolved was the reason for Amit's major change in attitude. The conflict was introduced to the reader when Amit's mother announced that his Dida would be coming to visit them in Canada, which was the location of the inciting incident. His mother constantly nagged him about having to clean his room, and he felt that she was making too much of a fuss about Dida's arrival. The development of the conflict continues as the mounting action begins. Amit's Dida comes to Canada and his life has changed drastically. His parents began spending so much time with Dida that they no longer had time for him. He begins to feel jealous of this lack of attention he was receiving, not only from his parents, but also from his daughter. One day, Amit suggests the family go out to McDonald's for dinner, which leads to the climax of the story. After starting to eat meals, Amit's conflict is finally resolved when his girlfriend eats and falls in love with the Big Mac. She started talking to Amit and asked him all her food-related questions, making him feel more adult and important . With this newly gained confidence, he realized that he was starting to appreciate…the medium of paper…him and helping others. Finally, back home, Dida gave Amit a gift: a photo of herself as a young girl, holding an ice cream cone. Feeling touched upon receiving this gift, Amit also gives her a gift: a bluish-purple stone with a yellow stripe to remind her. Through all this, Amit has demonstrated how, in a short period of time spent with someone, their negative traits can reverse one hundred and eighty degrees and become positive. In conclusion, Amit is shown to be a rude boy who managed to become a gentleman, despite how negatively he initially felt about his grandmother's presence. Through these changes, it is evident how much he had matured mentally, with his new and open views of his grandmother. His unexpected arrival had allowed the boy's true inner self to be revealed as his character developed and grew in the situation.
