Hamlet worries that the ghost who appeared to be his father may actually be the devil. When Hamlet realizes that a group of actors are about to perform for the kingdom, he devises a plan that will determine Claudius' fate. Hamlet decides to ask the actors to reenact his father's murder so he can carefully observe Claudius' reaction; consequently, “he would capture the king's conscience” (2, 2, 584) if he were truly guilty of murder. The show begins and all is well, until the actor who played the king is "poisoned". After the death scene, Claudio immediately gets up and the show stops. It's obvious that the play upset him.
