Dante Inferno is a story about the journey through hell of Dante Alighieri, the Italian poet, to save Beatrice, his beloved, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. The journey of Dante and Virgil briefly and concisely represented the Christian belief in the afterlife through the nine circles of hell, sinners and their related punishments. Each circle of Hell specifically painted a picture of the punishments of sinners based on the acts they performed while alive. Nine different circles described nine different sins people committed; however, the second circle, also called Lust, was the one that I found most related to system theory. The sin committed by the people of the second circle was characterized by the stimulation of the flesh in life. The visualization of the afterlife in the Christian faith and the love between man and woman represented the symbolic subsystem. The deaths and wars for which sinners sacrificed themselves were the price they had to pay for their lust and represented the commercial subsystem. Finally, their power to provoke wars to satisfy their sexual desire represented the subsystem of the social hierarchy. When Dante and Virgil left the first circle and entered the second circle of hell, Minos seemed to be the guardian of this circle. “Minos horribly, and growls; Examine the transgression at the entrance” . This second level was the true beginning of the torments of Hell which was also the place where evil spirits sincerely confessed their sins to be placed in the proper level. After the sinner confessed his sins, Minos assigned them to a specific circle based on a certain number of times he wrapped his tail around it. In the second circle,...... in the center of the sheet......if of their social hierarchies in society at that time. As a result, decisions to trade to satisfy one's lustful desires had a significant impact on society, as Semiramis, who changed the law to erase the guilt she had, was the wife of King Ninus. Helen of Troy was the wife of Menalaus whose brother was a Spartan king, and Paris was a princess of Troy. Taking Helen away from Menalaus had brought war between the two largest kingdoms of the time. The war could not have happened if Paris had not been the princess of Troy. As a reader, I sometimes found it difficult to understand the reasoning behind the way Dante arranged the order of sins in the different levels of Hell. However, the entire journey through Dante and Virgil's hell helped me to better understand the interactions between the subsystems that made up the society of the time.
