Oscar Wilde's 19th century The Picture of Dorian Gray portrays a naïve young man, Dorian Gray, who begins to change due to Lord Henry's negative influence on him him. Wilde initially portrays Dorian as a sweet and sensitive man who everyone admires, he has been described as a "wonderful young man". Dorian was not interested in money or power, however, once he met Lord Henry Wotton through a mutual friend, Basil Hallward, it was simply the beginning of his end, as eventually Lord Henry's influence pollutes his mind. Lord Henry gives Dorian a book about a man who seeks beauty in evil pleasures, Dorian slowly but surely becomes his "prey". This essay will examine the dynamic personality and changes that occur in Dorian Gray's character as a result of Lord Henry's impact on him, Dorian's attempts at transformation, and ultimately his realization of corruption. Although Lord Henry claims that “all influence is immoral,” it still changes Dorian. Lord Henry, who likes to manipulate people, notices Dorian's vulnerability and innocence and immediately gets to work. He soon plants the seeds of terror in the young man, an unreasonable and immature fear of growing old and losing his youthful beauty. Basil is a good friend of Dorian Gray and it is he who introduces him to Lord Henry. Basil begs Henry saying “Don't spoil him influence him. Your influence would be bad” (Wilde, 10). From the beginning, Wilde begins to describe what kind of person Lord Henry is. Lord Henry makes Dorian his new target to have a great influence on, and he sees it like a psychological case, like a puppet he can easily control. "You are too charming to be in philanthropy, Mr. Gray... far too charming," Henry tells him... in the middle of the paper... named and influenced by Lord Henry for most of his life. When Dorian compares his friendship with Basil to his friendship with Lord Henry, he sees that Basil has never influenced him in any noticeable way, he is the same person with or without Basil's friendship. Lord Henry, on the other hand, gave him new ideas and feelings, he always knew that Lord Henry's influence on him would be profound and yet, he still accepted it. He also recognized that Lord Henry was simply stirring up thoughts that were already somewhere inside him. Dorian must have already been a little corrupt himself, to continue to be Lord Henry's victim since Basil was not at all convinced by him. Dorian allows Henry to have such a great impact on him, as well as follows him, and once he recognizes his evil soul, he gives in and for once does not influence himself for the better..
