Society tells people that if they go to war and fight for their country, they are heroes. Every generation has war heroes who sacrificed a lot. Many heroes die fighting for their nation while other heroes survive and have to live with post-traumatic symptoms stimulated by physical and/or mental trauma. Ernest Hemingway, a World War I expatriate, recognizes the effects of war on soldiers and effectively captures the anguish, alienation, and detachment of the heroes in The Sun Also Rises through his writing style. Hemingway's concise and simple, yet effective sentences captivate people in his novel. The characters in The Sun Also Rises illustrate the Lost Generation that emerged from World War I, and as a result of their war experiences and the social upheaval of that brevity, they were depicted as cynical exasperators lacking emotional stability. Happiness and love deteriorate due to the catastrophe of the First World War. The characters in this novel neglect to realize that society is changing the title of soldiers from war heroes to "lost" heroes and although they try to suppress and escape reality and drown their sorrows with wine and cynical humor to gain one subliminal stimulus of hope, they are all part of the lost generation. Some war veterans of the lost generation had physical injuries from World War I that affect their lives and affect their individual character. Jake Barnes exemplifies this tragedy. Jake is the narrator of The Sun Also Rises. As a first-person narrator, he allows you to better understand his character's thoughts and feelings while providing his personal perspective on the actions he endures. This access creates a sense of sympathy because he is a war hero who is suffering mentally and physically… middle of paper… yes, in their escape mentality which was usual for expats. The lost generation uses alcohol and partying to alleviate feelings of confusion about adversity and to fuel the hope of escape. The lost generation was indeed lost. They preoccupy their lives with alcohol, partying and their ideas of escapism to escape the mental wounds of war rather than being aware of their surroundings. However, they did not try to find solutions, but drowned themselves in these negative aspects and forced themselves to ignore reality. Fortunately, there were few people of the lost generation who attempted to give meaning to their lives, but on the whole the war veterans who were supposed to be war heroes and other people after World War I were simply described as a lost generation, a demonstration of the tragedy of the lost generation.
