Topic > Thy Kingdom Come: Exploring the Meaning of This…

Prayer is an important part of our daily lives. By praying regularly we get closer to God because we communicate with God. In prayer we may ask Him for help or thank and praise Him for His blessings, but we are talking to the Lord and He sincerely wants to hear and answer the prayers of His people. The second request in the Lord's Prayer is for your kingdom to come. This request is mentioned in Luke 11 when Jesus teaches his disciples to pray and in Matthew 6:10 in Jesus' sermon on the mountain where the topic was the kingdom of heaven. In Luke 11 the disciples are not only told what they should pray but also how they should pray this. A person who prays on the street to receive praise from men does not sincerely mean what he prays. They pray openly to give others the impression of their piety but they do not deceive God. Jesus told his disciples that they should not pray in the streets giving men the impression of their piety but that they should pray in secret, for prayer is a personal matter and only then will they put God in the foreground in their prayer. Jesus teaches his disciples that prayer is not a show but a genuinely turning to God, it creates a relationship between God and man, so when we pray the appreciation of this relationship should be existing. When you pray “thy kingdom come” you are praying for the kingdom of God's grace and faith in the gospel, which in turn means a relationship with the Lord. Praying sincerely means you truly mean what you say when you pray to God, it means you pray from the bottom of your heart, sincerely meaning every word you say. Therefore when you pray "thy kingdom come" you ask that God may rule over you and include you among the inhabitants of His... middle of the paper... commandments. The Ten Commandments were given to Moses in the Old Testament and these Ten Commandments are still applicable today. They were given to the people of Israel as a guideline by which they should live their lives. God ordained them and still expects us to obey each of His commands. In Matthew 22:36-40 we can read how Jesus responds when asked what the greatest commandment in the law is. It says, “'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment and the second is similar: "Love your neighbor as yourself." All the law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” From this we know that prayer is also requested as a gift of gratitude to the Lord. In prayer we show our love to the Lord and therefore obey this commandment.
