Principal Peattie, who is seen as a self-centered man thanks to his constant referring to himself in the third person. In a way, this also disconnects him from the situations he finds himself in. Although Peattie is not a major character, the brief moment where he uses "I" instead of "Principal Peattie" is an important scene. Peattie is not only showing vulnerability, but she is showing Doug that he did something good. Principal Peattie compliments Doug twice, first when he says “I haven't told many students this, but I'll tell you. I think you will go wherever you want” (Schmidt 353). The second is when he thanks Doug “for what [he] did for Coach Reed” (Schmidt 353).
