Topic > The Pros and Cons of the Smoking Ban - 2150

The smoking ban is one of the problems that many at West Virginia University face. This ban was declared as policy number 57 under the name Tobacco Free Campus. Since smoking is starting to be a global problem that people all over the world are facing, WVU wanted to keep its students healthy and try to reduce the smoking habit among college students. This means that the purpose of this policy is to establish a rule that prevents students from using tobacco products on WVU's campus or anywhere on university property. The policy states that individuals such as students, employees, and any member of the WVU community are not permitted to use tobacco products (West Virginia University Board of Governors, 2010). This smoking ban is an understandable step WVU has taken to keep its students healthier. However, there is a percentage of students who are smokers and would try to resist. They refuse to follow the ban policy because they believe that this policy controls them and does not allow them to smoke wherever they want. In fact, some students have stated that it is better to look for other universities where they can smoke wherever they want (Bosserman, 2013). They say that their health is their property and they are free to do anything with their health, ignoring the effects of secondhand smoke. Considering the issue from a health point of view, it can be said that the smoking ban is a good solution adopted by WVU to improve or at least reduce the negative effects of smoking or tobacco products. Since they care about the health of their students, it is hoped that smoking students will respect the idea behind the smoking ban and abide by the policy and stop smoking on campus. However, this smoking ban was not only done for health reasons, but also for environmental reasons
