NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONSMany avenues can be flagged, "NGOs", but there is considerable confusion both in the literature and among policymakers about what we mean by all-inclusive NGOs (Munk1992). a definition or typology of the term NGO since many of these groups differ in their goals and missions. However there are common characteristics that run through all definitions and the United Nations in 1959 defined NGOs as “any international organization which is not established by intergovernmental agreement”. (ECOSOC Resolution 288[X], Article 71). In the intervening years these organizations have become enormously influential players on the world stage, so they are playing an important role in society by enabling more than national government and global governance institutions to achieve. In this essay, the achievements of NGOs that governments have failed to follow and achieve will be discussed at length. NGOs have become very influential in the major concerns that people face. Thomas. W. Ditcher (1999) agrees with this notion as he states that NGOs have leadership with prominent voices when it comes to the environmental movement, the importance of women and the transfer of the concept of sustainability from the physical to the financial and social. organizational scope. Thus making NGOs more significant in the lives of the people they serve, as they address people's key concerns while governments do not. Simply put, these organizations have proven to be more in touch with the civilians they serve than governments. A major NGO says its mission is to eradicate poverty among the poor by overcoming the injustice and inequity that causes it.... ... middle of paper ... in hospitals and they even have volunteers who work in hospitals where there is a shortage of staff to assist the country's population. Frank R. G and Salkever DS (1994) agree with this idea as they state that NGOs hold a substantial share of US healthcare markets and care for seventy percent of all acute care hospital admissions. Furthermore, in the United States, nongovernmental organizations are responsible for half of the healthcare market for specialty inpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment. In a nutshell it can be said that NGOs have excelled in the healthcare sector as many of the people who cannot afford to go to hospital for treatment are now dependent on them for their reliable services. Non-governmental organizations have also succeeded in developing third world countries in terms of infrastructure.
