This is a national refuge of Costa Rica, located within Bahia Culebra, 4th district of Nacascolo, Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, only approximately 34.2 km and 32 minutes from central Liberia. The Refuge corresponds to the Area de Conservacion Tempisque (ACT), and is administered by the Sistema Nacional de Areas de Conservacion (SINAC). Before 1993 thanks to the movements of some communities such as Liberia, Sardinal, Palmira, Comunidad, Guardia and others to promote the protection of the natural region and habitats of "Playa Iguanita" the "Iguanita Wildlife Refuge" was created to provide protection to the beach, to forests, mangroves and fauna.1. Creation:According to the desire to maintain, preserve and develop a natural place like the ancient place “PlayaIguanita”, in 1993 a group of leaders from different communities in the area proposed to transform the area into a refuge area. As a result, the proposal was welcomed by Executive Order 23217 of MIRENEM (currently MINAE) and ICT which created the Iguanita Wildlife Refuge in 1994 to maintain and develop low-impact tourism. This refusal was decreed for the protection of the great diversity of marine and cultural species. resources, as well as providing opportunities for research, protection, education and low-impact social tourism; for this reason it has the support of social, regional and political institutions to increase the protection of the terrestrial ecosystems and of the sailors of the area and the maintenance of the tradition of popular use of the “Playa Iguanita”http://www.sinac.go.cr/ AC/ ACT/RNVS%20Iguanita/Paginas/default.aspx2. The objective of the Refuge is to guarantee Costa Ricans and Guanacastecos the enjoyment of the Refuge, guaranteeing equal opportunities and rights so that all citizens can have access to the enjoyment of the beach. the controversy and struggle of these associations follows the objective of maintaining nature intact, beautiful, perfect and majestic, for which the ICT, the MINAE and the municipalities that are part of the government give concessions to parts of the beach and the refuge, causing the loss of the natural and magical aspect of this beach which is family love, which exists in this place thanks to the tradition of hundreds of families who gather on the beach to camp for 3 or 4 days several times a year.
