Topic > Disturbing theme in the following modernist works:...

Modernism as a new genre emerged as a reaction to its predecessor, realism, and took its place in the literary canon. Having been introduced to the literary world by facing the brutal facts of life and its chaotic realities, he brought different aspects to the world of writers. Its difference existed as a result of its novelty not only in content but also in form. The genre of Modernism brought new dimensions to literature by means of new unconventional and unusual techniques. In the fields of art and literature, Modernism caused a shift in aesthetic and cultural sensibilities with the post-World War I period. Followers of Modernism in literature strove to free themselves from the aesthetic weight of Realism. They followed a different path. They introduced new devices, techniques and motifs that mark a distinctive break with previous genres. One of the motifs or themes covered in modernist novels is the theme of restlessness, which we do not see in any realist novel. In my essay I will study this theme by referring to various modernist works such as Rebecca, A Haunted House and The Painted Veil. The theme of the haunting with its particularity is widely associated with Modernism and is much studied in novels. modernist in nature. Since modernist writers downplay content for the sake of investigation of form, the use of disturbing themes is an advantage for this purpose. It contributes to the unusual fragmented and non-chronological writing style, which goes well with. The circular, fragmented and jumping narrative from here to there reinforces the sense of uneasiness. The narrator suddenly and let's say constantly returns to the past with flashbacks then... halfway through the paper... he is still under Rebecca's influence. Because she lives in Rebecca's house she is forced to learn things about her. The more he discovers about Rebecca, the stronger the feeling of uneasiness becomes. He can't fight her. She constantly feels that she should show the same habits with Rebecca such as using the hall after breakfast, writing letters, preferring the meal menu to be accepted by the servants. In doing so, she becomes more and more captured. She is totally caught up in the past. Even though he is in the present he keeps returning to the past, unable to ignore its effect. To conclude, in modernist works like the ones I mentioned above the theme of restlessness is introduced through different ideas and ways. materials, is not necessarily managed with the use of real ghosts.
