Topic > Analysis of the Planet Without Monkeys - 2380

This aspect is “The double-edged sword of ecotourism”. In this chapter, Stanford expresses the positive and negative aspects of ecotourism. Ecotourism is a form of tourism that involves visiting fragile and pristine natural areas and in this case the main reason is to see gorillas. Ecotourism has its positive and negative sides. This is good because poor communities living near monkey habitats can have a source of income. These areas are really poor and with ecotourism they can earn around 9000 dollars a month. However, those areas may not exactly be the safest. Stanford cites a 1999 cross-border attack by rebel groups in Rwanda in which 8 ecotourists were murdered, and this attack deterred tourists from going there for many months. Another negative aspect of ecotourism is how it affects monkeys. Although many monkeys that live in these areas of habit and have tourists coming in and out, they develop really high stress levels. When humans move too fast or make loud noises, monkeys become stressed and may flee. Not only that, increased stress levels lower their immune system making them more susceptible to disease. Stanford concludes this chapter by saying that ecotourism is bound to happen if countries are too poor to support their own populations and that “monkeys will have to live with the results” (190). In
