In every battle he entered he knew he would receive glory or die. Beowulf, with his superhuman strength, decided to be a good Samaritan and fight for Hrothgar. Risking their lives so that the Danes can have the glory of a land free from intruding monsters. Before the battle with Grendel's mother, Beowulf says, "wiser than kings, now that I have come to the point of action, I ask you to remember what we said before...if I should fall and die while serving your cause , I would act like a father to me later. This battle kills me, take care of my young company… with the hunt I will gain glory or die” (73-74). Remains faithful to his people and himself and does everything he can to receive glory. Beowulf's last battle was against the Dragon. Being an older king, Beowulf was aware that his last days were approaching. Knowing this, Beowulf was willing to risking his life one last time for the greater good of his kingdom, essentially sacrificing himself and surrendering the throne to glory one last time. As Beowulf takes his last breath, he explains, "to the eternal Lord of all, to the King of Glory, I give thanks for seeing this treasure here before me, for allowing me to leave my people so well... gifted the day I die..." (101) . As Beowulf speaks these words, the reader can obviously understand that he fought and died for glory and glory
