The democratic views I hold include the issues of abortion and gay marriage. Although abortion is, essentially, the killing of an unborn child, I believe it should only be legal when there is a high risk to the life of the mother and/or unborn child. As for gay marriage, although I hold a biblical view of marriage as between one man and one woman, I believe it is the right of every human being to be happy. Whether you are heterosexual or homosexual, you have the right to be happy and no one should discriminate against you for your choice of sexual orientation. By holding these views, I have generated a negotiated reading (Sorrells, p. 136) of popular democratic beliefs because, although I may agree with the general premise of the view, I have modified the meaning to fit my own morals and beliefs . I know there are some liberals who do not support such democratic views and vice versa, I am just making a general statement regarding the beliefs of the two parties. My family, however, has strong pro-life and anti-gay marriage views. They believe that abortion should be illegal in all cases and that homosexuals should not be allowed to marry. Similar to my theological views, I don't openly share all my political opinions with family because I know their reaction and I don't want them to think differently of me. I feel comfortable sharing my Republican views with them
