On June 6, 1943, an unexpected hero with a crooked spine and strong legs was born in Greenbow, Alabama. Forrest Gump is not a conventional hero, yet his accolades and successes suggest otherwise. A hero is someone who inspires and instills good morals in others through his courageous and exceptional acts. Forrest demonstrates these characteristics several times throughout his heroic journey. Whether it was diplomatic ping-pong, fighting in the Vietnam War, becoming a local football legend at the University of Alabama, or donating money to the family of a deceased friend, Forrest influenced many people with his acts altruistic and charitable. Joseph Campbell's monomyth consists of the following stages: setting in an ordinary world, calling to adventure, rejecting said calling, meeting a mentor, crossing the threshold, trials and tribulations, approaching the final challenge, a test, a reward , the journey home, a purification or resurrection into the normal world, and a return home with the ability to alter the world he lives in. Many heroes follow this journey and Forrest Gump is no exception. A hero is defined as: a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievement, or noble qualities (Oxford). This definition can be modified to incorporate many perspectives of a "hero". Two people's idea of a hero may be similar, but the exact identity in their respective perspectives will vary. In my opinion, all it takes is for an average man to put a coat on a shivering child in the street to make the leap from average to hero. Forrest Gump is a hero because he goes the extra mile, exceeds everyone's expectations of him, like when he was young and braced his leg... middle of paper... and the genuine kindness extends beyond simply treat the President of the United States as a normal person, even if Forrest Gump ignores the "problems" of different people. At the University of Alabama, two African-American students gain admission after a huge ordeal about blacks going to colleges with whites due to the enormous amount of racism the United States of America has had. As the two African-American students climbed the stairs, one dropped a book, and Forrest rushed through police officers and rioters to pick up the book and hand it to the black student who dropped it. Forrest's ignorance certainly contributes to his altruism and generosity towards different people (during the period of American history the film was based on), however, it is one of his traits that makes him a true unexpected hero..
