for him the logic was to associate attraction to men with nausea, making homosexuality so repugnant that he would become straight. Within three days of admission Clegg-Hill was dead (Tatchell). Even though these practices have injured or even killed some of their "patients", there are still some survivors and journalists who have proven that conversion therapy doesn't work. in his article “Homosexuality Cannot Be Cured,” Casey Sanchez argues that restorative camps are harming the LGBT community. He profiles gay former minister John Smid. Smid was the founder of Love in Action (LIA). Most of the clients of this camp were young people from religious families. These kids were forced into these camps because their parents wanted them to learn that being gay is a sin and can drive a person away from family, church, and home. Smid was also struggling with his sexuality. Founding the LIA gave Smid the platform he needed to ward off young people. The LIA is strong today, but Smid left because he discovered that there is no fundamental evidence that anyone can transition from homosexual to heterosexual (Sanchez). Sanchez found that these camps treat their clients like children. They have to return at a certain time, they can't talk to anyone in town and they have to travel a certain route back to the camp so as not to trigger homosexual feelings. They are not treated as individuals, but more like property and money. They are not treated like human beings, but rather like a disease (Sanchez). Robert Spitzer, a well-known retired Columbia University professor, issued an official apology to the LGBT community on NPR's Talk of The Nation with Neal Conan show. Spitze......middle sheet......Wrong.” Alcorn had committed suicide on December 28, 2014 and posted her suicide note on Tumblr. Conversion therapy is a practice that has been shown not to be harmful but has also been shown not to work. There is a gene that causes homosexuality, and therefore proves that homosexuality is genetic and not a choice. Many people have gone through conversion therapy and sadly some of them did not survive. Leelah Alcorn did not survive the therapeutic process her parents put her through because she was emotionally damaged by all the negative comments about her being transgender. There is a petition to sign the Leelah Bill, which would ban the practice of conversion therapy. The petition achieved its goal. Now it is up to the United States Constitution to convince its representatives to pass this law to ban this form of therapy from this nation..
