My family never had any customs or beliefs, the only belief was that if the child has a stomach ache, the parents massage the stomach with oil to make the child feel better from stomach pain. Typically many who have stomach pain will vomit or have diarrhea that lasts a few days, food will get stuck on their belly; in that case massaging the belly with oil will prevent the baby from getting further ill and will help speed up the process. There are many customs from different cultures that I have heard about, especially in the Hispanic community, but that my family and I don't believe in, such as the evil eye. The evil eye is given to a child when someone sees him and wants to carry him, but cannot because the mother said no. Indeed the evil eye causes the child to cry and scream or even make him sick. Children are given red bracelets to help them avoid the evil eye. Another belief is that of the sunken fontanelle, which occurs when the baby's soft spot on the top of the head sags because he was given the evil eye or if the mother stopped breastfeeding early. Therefore, one remedy that helps is to put your thumb in your mouth to push the head up or turn the baby upside down to hit him on the soles of his feet. Many families have their own customs, but I was never brought up with any of these customs I mentioned; many of the customs I know were due to friends and their parents; they told me what they did to their children so they could grow up
