Each year, over 250,000 people make Canada their new home. Attracted by its education system, economy and universal healthcare system, there are few other places in the world like it. All Canadians are guaranteed equality before the law and equality of opportunity, regardless of where they come from. However, some may argue that Canadian policy has not been implemented as it should. Is the concept of true equality a far-fetched idea? It appears that Canada has taken great measures to socially promote the integration of immigrants, but can the same be said for their economic integration? Politically? To judge whether or not Canada has succeeded in promoting immigrant integration in these areas, a deeper understanding of Canadian politics must be considered. The integration of immigrants in Canada (or any other country) involves integration in three different spheres: social sphere, economic sphere and institutional sphere. (12) Social integration refers to the ability of immigrants to form relationships and have social interactions with other Canadians. Integration in the economic sphere refers to the ability of immigrants to enter the workforce and perform jobs that match their qualifications, while integration in the institutional sphere refers to the ability of immigrants to become “fully functional citizens, without facing systemic barriers resulting from the structure and functioning of major institutions. A well-integrated immigrant group is one that faces no institutional obstacles, no market disadvantages and no social isolation." (12)Canada has been more successful in social integration of immigrants. In 1971, Canada was the first country to adopt the mult...... middle of paper... to give a voice to thousands of residents and taxpayers and make local government more accountable to residents who are directly affected from municipal services. Extending voting rights would also promote newcomers' integration and attachment to Canada and civic institutions more generally, while promoting the salience of issues affecting newcomers. It would also encourage a new respect and recognition of immigrants. (__)In conclusion, Canada has come a long way in promoting the social integration of immigrants. The country is making progress in the economic integration of immigrants, and there is still much to do before the same can be said on a political level. What is certain is that the path to immigrant integration may be a slow process and the Canadian government has been slow to promote it... but the future looks bright and Canada is on the right path.
