Lena Younger's “dream” plantIn the story A Raisin in the Sun Lena Younger takes care of a small house plant. This plant represents dreams. Mom dreams of her family getting out of poverty and living in a bigger and better place, and also that they continue to grow together as a family. Mom wants to keep her dreams alive and keep her family close to her heart. The mother's plant that she takes care of represents this dream by “looking at her plant and splashing water on it” (52) showing in a small way that she will try to keep her plant and their dreams alive. He takes care of this plant as if it were one of his children. Mother's children also have their own dreams and plans on how to achieve them. The family's conflicting dreams are emphasized by using a symbol to represent these dreams in this case: the mother's plant.
