Topic > The sense of style in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby

The green light appeared several times in the film as a small sign, but it also had a big scene in the middle of the film. This also played a significant role in the story, but was a little different from the introductory and final versions. It was less dreamy and light was used as an element. The setup is slightly different. We see Nick and Gatsby conversing after the party, and Jay tells Nick about his plans for the future with Daisy. This scene is more like a memory than the other two versions (which are mostly representations of feelings). From Nick's reaction we understand that he thinks Jay is crazy, but he still feels sympathy for his friend. Surprisingly enough, Jay is also wearing a black suit in this scene. This signals to viewers that Jay's dark side appears in this scene
