How do techniques used in a prescribed text develop ideas and influence your response as a reader? The revenge tragedy, “Hamlet,” by William Shakespeare is a story of murder, secrets and lies in which a son is called upon by the ghost of his father to avenge his death. Shakespeare uses a number of techniques to influence the reader's understanding of the major themes and ideas of “Hamlet.” The most effective techniques used within the play are the soliloquies that give depth to both character and story, the powerful displays of imagery used within the play, and the double understanding that emphasizes the connection between king and country. Through these techniques Shakespeare is able to develop the work in such a way that it influences the reader by communicating a deeper meaning and more complex understanding. Soliloquies are one of the most important techniques used within “Hamlet”. Soliloquies give the audience deeper insight into the character's emotions and mental state. Shakespeare uses soliloquies to allow the audience to feel the depth of emotion in Hamlet's character. In perhaps Hamlet's most famous soliloquy he cries, “to be or not to be, that is the question/Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,/Or to take up arms against a sea of troubles ”. , /And resisting putting an end to it (Act III, I, 56).” This quote also reveals a part of the story that would otherwise be hidden from the reader, such as his state of mind and even his desire to commit suicide to escape the pain in his life. The reader's response, consequently, is altered as it is made clear that Hamlet is evidently struggling to get to the end...... middle of paper ......vengeance will come (Act IV, VII, 25). " This act of murder is reflected on society through the vengeful advance of Fortinbras and his army towards Denmark in an attempt to regain his father's land. This dual understanding gives the play an added element of excitement and intensifies the overall meaning and the depth of the play through the relationship with the political elements of the surrounding society. The technique of double understanding creates depth in “Hamlet” and influences the reader to examine the deeper meaning of the play as a whole of the technique portrayed in this essay, it is clear that Shakespeare is able to influence the reader through soliloquies, imagery, and double understanding. This overall influence is both the communication of a deeper meaning, and a more complex understanding of events and statements within “Hamlet.
