Topic > The Decline of Biodiversity: The Humanity Effect

Early in the morning, animals of all different species can be seen wandering around any ordinary suburban backyard. Common animals that can be observed are rabbits, squirrels, birds and many others. What if those animals slowly began to disappear, never to be seen again? This is the sad truth that is beginning to manifest itself on planet earth. The Earth is currently experiencing one of the largest mass extinctions ever recorded in the history books. Why isn't this on the front page of every newspaper? The answer to this question is time. Humans don't pay much attention to things that happen over millions and billions of years, because those same humans won't stay alive long enough to see the damage that's being caused here and now. These extinctions occur over millions of years, and even the death of a few species each year is enough to add up over millions of years. With this decline in diversity on planet earth, how will it affect all of humanity? Together with all these other species, a network has formed which, although extremely large and convoluted, is also very fragile. In some cases, Earth's biosphere is only one potential species death away from catastrophic consequences, but the problems have not yet been addressed. Humanity's overuse of planetary resources is part of the problem, but it is certainly not the only one. Every step we take can have a potentially devastating impact on the environment. Some of the major problems facing our diminishing biodiversity are pollution, destruction of natural habitats, and unsafe environmental practices such as the extraction of fossil fuels or various valuable minerals. Something must be done to help conserve biodiversity on Earth before... middle of paper......and the main culprits behind the huge number of extinctions are fossil fuels, it would seem like a simple choice to eliminate them from use. Not only would it be impossible to do so in a complete and timely manner, but it would bring a host of new economic and conceptual problems. Various solutions need to be implemented quickly, but solutions to carbon problems need to be small and forward-looking in nature. Create policies to better clean up our record while finding ways to slowly recover our dependence on fossil fuels. One way the need for fossil fuels could be eliminated is by increasing renewable energy technology. Renewable energies such as hydrogen energy and solar energy are becoming more feasible every day as the cost of traditional energy increases, while the cost of energy produced from renewable sources is constantly decreasing.
